When you are building a wedding budget, the list of costs never seems to end: venue, catering, outfits, jewellery, photography, decor, invitations. A videographer can look like one item too many, especially when you already have a photographer.
So is it worth it? For many couples, yes, but not for everyone and not at every level. Here is a balanced way to think it through.
What a film gives you that photographs cannot
Photographs capture how a moment looked. A film captures how it felt: the sound of your partner’s voice during the vows, your grandmother’s laugh, the drums at the start of the ceremony, the speeches you were too nervous to fully remember.
Wedding days pass quickly, and most couples say they remember surprisingly little of it afterwards. A film lets you return to the parts you were not able to see, such as the groom’s arrival, your family’s reactions and conversations at tables you never reached.
It also matters for people who could not attend. Relatives overseas, elderly family members and friends who could not travel can watch the ceremony properly rather than through a few shared pictures.
A film also grows in value over time. Faces, voices and entire family circles change over the years, and the people who appear in your film today may be among the most precious things you own in a decade. That is difficult to put a price on when you are comparing quotes, but it is worth remembering.
When it is probably worth it
- Your wedding includes traditions and rituals you want to remember in order, such as the Poruwa ceremony or a religious service.
- Speeches, blessings or vows are important to you and your families.
- Many loved ones are abroad or unable to attend.
- You expect to want to share the story with children or grandchildren one day.
- Your guest list is large, and you know you will not get to speak to everyone.
When you could reasonably skip it or keep it simple
If your wedding is very small, if you are spending on other priorities that matter more to you, or if you simply prefer stills, a full film may not be necessary. There are also lighter options between nothing and everything.
At Endora, for instance, Endora Highlight is a four to six minute highlight film over twelve hours of coverage at LKR 65,000 in Full HD, and Endora Social offers iPhone-based coverage with three to five reels from LKR 15,000. If you want a complete record of the day, Essential Moments includes ten hours, audio recording, a highlight of up to three minutes and a full film of up to sixty minutes from LKR 80,000. Full prices and 4K options are on our pricing page.
How to judge whether the extra cost is fair
The cost of a package should reflect what is actually delivered. Compare in terms of hours of coverage, the number of cinematographers, how audio is handled, the length and style of the final film, and the delivery timeline.
Watch complete films, not only the shortest trailers. A short teaser can hide weak audio or gaps in coverage. A full film shows whether the ceremony is followed properly and whether the story flows from preparation to the final dance.
Also read the terms. Check what the advance secures, what happens if plans change and what is promised in writing. Ours are set out in our terms of service, and a reputable studio will be happy to explain theirs.
Finally, think about the working relationship. You will spend an entire day with these people, often at your most emotional. Choose a team you feel comfortable with, who listen to your plans and respect your families’ traditions.
Ways to make it fit your budget
You do not have to choose the biggest package. Consider these approaches.
- Prioritise the ceremony and speeches, and shorten coverage of the late evening.
- Choose a highlight film rather than a long cinematic edit.
- Book early, so you can plan the cost across your wedding budget.
- Add extra hours only if your programme truly runs long.
The question is not really whether a videographer is an extra, but whether the memories matter enough to you to protect. Years from now, the flowers and favours will be forgotten, while the sound of the day will still be there to replay.
